If you’ve been following me on Facebook (and if you haven’t, you should be!), you probably know that I’ve been doing some #vaguebooking the past couple of weeks on a professional project I’ve been working on. Well, here’s the big reveal on this Amazing, Incredible and Uncanny project, that’s ready to Assemble!
I’m very honored to announce that I’ve been invited to do some work for the 2016 Marvel Masterpiece trading card set from the good people over at Upperdeck. This set is an homage to the 1992 Marvel Masterpiece set by Joe Jusko. I’ve been a fan of Joe Jusko’s work for years, so it’s a privilege to be asked to contribute to this set.
I’m creating approximately 60 cards for this set, each one drawing inspiration from the cards that Joe did on the 1992 set. I’m taking great care to select some really unique, classic characters to draw, within the parameters provided by Marvel, and I’m doing some techniques that you guys haven’t seen me do before. As soon as my art is approved, I’ll share it with everyone, including time lapse videos of me drawing them!
For those unfamiliar with how the sketch card gig works, I’m drawing on actual cards that measure about 2.5 x 3.5 inches; these are really top notch, quality little art boards, about as thick as a cutting mat, and these originals will be sent in for approval by Marvel. The cool thing is, not only will reproductions of this art be made for the individual sets (along with the work from other artists on this project), but the actual original art boards that we’re drawing on will be inserted at random into various packs that you buy! So you could end up owning one of these originals, which I’m kinda jealous of, cause these are coming out pretty cool!
Additionally, I have six artist proof cards that I’ll be able to sell directly to my fans! These are rare, and will not be duplicated for the regular trading card packs, so the buyers will be getting a really unique, collectible piece of art. Two of them have already been claimed, and if you’re interested in staking a claim on one of the remaining four, message me privately and I’ll give you the details on them. We have some limits on what characters we can and cannot draw, and even the artist proof cards will need to be approved by Marvel, which only increases the value of your piece. I have characters chosen for these cards which I’m NOT doing for the rest of the set, but if you want to choose a favorite Marvel character of your own, let me know and I’ll see if it’s one that’s allowed if you want to claim one of the remaining artist proof cards. Know that these will be the COMIC BOOK versions of the characters, not the movie versions.
I know there’s several of you waiting patiently for commissions and for work to continue on the Kickstarter book, but I believe that whenever you get an opportunity to work on a property as important as Marvel, you drop whatever personal projects you have going on and get that experience on your resume. I should be finished with the cards this weekend, and then roll right into getting ready for C2E2 in Chicago in a couple of weeks, which is one of my biggest shows of the year. I hope I get to see a lot of you out there! When I return from that, work will continue on outstanding commissions and the kickstarter book.
It’s been a great year so far. Between Game of Thrones for HBO, and now Marvel and Upperdeck, I’m getting to do official work on some of my all time favorite characters…
…and it’s only March. Let’s see where the rest of the year will go (and watch for a big announcement for Summer!), cause it’s time to GET MEDIEVAL on 2016!!!
